DPPt: Honey Tree RNG tools

Munchlax

Use these in combination with Pokéfinder (or RNG Reporter) to manipulate honey tree encounters.

General instructions
  1. Overview

RNG manipulation of honey trees occurs in two steps:

First, you must manipulate the Pokémon you want to appear on the tree, which is determined at the time the honey is slathered. The "Honey tree reporter" section below will calculate which Pokémon will appear for a given seed.

Second, after 6 hours have passed, you can optionally manipulate the encounter for shininess, ability, IVs, etc. To manipulate this, you must use Pokéfinder to do standard manipulation of DPPt wild encounters (Method J). Remember to save your game after the 6 hours have passed, so the Pokémon that is on the tree will stay there while you do this second manip! If you do not care about these, you can skip this and just catch the Pokémon.

  2. Honey slather RNG basics

Honey trees store 3 different pieces of data that are generated at random when honey is slathered:

    • Encounter table
    • Encounter slot
    • Shake count

Encounter table and slot are what determine the Pokémon that will appear. There are 3 different encounter tables (Common, Rare, Munchlax) and 6 encounter slots per table. For more details, refer to the "Encounter tables" section below. Shake count is self-explanatory: it is how many times the tree will shake during its animation when the Pokémon appears.

The game keeps track of the last tree that you slathered with honey. This data is written to the save and never forgotten. If you slather honey on that remembered tree, there will be a 90% chance for the game to use the encounter table that was used for the previous slather (if the previous slather did not generate an encounter, the Common table is used). A new encounter slot is rolled at random. If you want to avoid this, slather some other tree before beginning the manipulation for your target tree.

There are two types of trees: normal and Munchlax trees. Normal trees will most often pick from the Common table, and uncommonly from the Rare table. Munchlax trees will most often pick from the Rare table, uncommonly from the Common table, and with only a 1% chance from the Munchlax table.

Therefore, hunting a Heracross, for example, is possible on any tree but will be easier on a Munchlax tree. Which trees are Munchlax trees depends on your trainer ID and secret ID. The "Munchlax tree calculator" section below will calculate these for you.

Some trees have wandering NPCs around them that can interfere with your manipulation; check this under the "NPC noise levels" section. If possible, it is highly recommended to use a tree with no NPC noise.

  3. Searching for your target

Refer to the "Encounter tables" section and find the table and encounter slot that contains your target Pokémon, and use this to filter the results from the Honey tree reporter.

Usually, it is not worth it to hit a specific initial seed for manipulating a honey slather; you can hit essentially any seed, and then check how many advances are required to reach the nearest instance of your target. If the number of advances is unluckily high, you can reset and try again.

If you have the Coin Flip Pokétch app, you can easily use this to check your seed in Pokéfinder. Otherwise, you will have to use Chatots and match the cry pattern.

For good starting targets, you can also check under the "Useful seeds" section.

  4. Avoiding time penalties

After you have slathered the honey, save your game and then do not change the clock or save on a different system for 6 hours while awaiting the encounter.

After the 6 hours have passed, load the game and press A on the tree to double check that you have hit your target Pokémon. If you have, reset and save in front of the tree to save the Pokémon currently on it. Then, if you wish, you can proceed with manipulating the encounter for shininess / IVs / etc.

  5. Using Pokéfinder to manipulate the encounter

If desired, you can use Pokéfinder to search for a seed that will generate some target PID and IVs on the encountered Pokémon. Honey tree encounters are normally affected by Pressure, Cute Charm, Synchronize, etc. as wild encounters are.

Rather than rolling for an encounter slot as wild encounters do, honey tree encounters instead roll a random level ranging from 5 to 15. You can check what level this will be using the "Encounter level check" tool at the bottom of the page.

NPC noise levels

"Noisy" NPCs are ones that advance the RNG via random movement; randomly wandering around or randomly looking around. NPCs that do not move, or move in a fixed pattern, such as walking in a circle or rotating clockwise/counterclockwise, are "quiet" and do not advance the RNG.

Tree Noise level Noisy NPCs
Route 205 (south) Noisy 5 quietable, 2 not
Route 205 (north) Quiet
Route 206 Noisy 1 quietable, 1 not
Route 207 Quiet with VS Seeker Hiker Kevin, Hiker Justin
Route 208 Quiet with VS Seeker Artist William, Hiker Jonathan
Route 209 Quiet with VS Seeker Breeder Albert, Breeder Jennifer
Route 210 (south) Quiet with VS Seeker Breeder Amber
Route 210 (north) Noisy 2 quietable, 1 not
Route 211 Quiet with VS Seeker Ruin Maniac Harry
Route 212 (north) Noisy 3 quietable, 2 not

Route 221 Quiet with VS Seeker Ace Trainer Shannon
Route 222 Quiet with VS Seeker Beauty Nicola, Tuber Holly, Sailor Marc
Valley Windworks Quiet
Eterna Forest Noisy 1 not quietable
Fuego Ironworks Quiet
Floaroma Meadow Quiet

To quiet an area with the VS Seeker, you must use the VS Seeker on the specified trainers, then battle and defeat them, so they stop moving. Be careful to include only the required trainers within the screen when you use the VS Seeker; if outside trainers are caught by it (even if they are not willing to battle), they will begin randomly looking around and will need to be battled to get them to stop.

    Encounter tables

There are three encounter tables: Common (table 1), Rare (table 2), and Ultra Rare / "Munchlax" (table 3). Each table has 6 encounter slots.

    Useful seeds

Most often, you can hit any seed and advance with Chatots until you reach the desired Pokémon. Alternatively, you can try to hit these seeds, which have some advantageous properties.

    Encounter level check

Obtain an encounter seed + advance from Pokéfinder that has the wanted PID / IVs / shininess / ability / etc., and then use this to check the level it will be, if needed. Under normal method J, this RNG call is used to determine encounter slot.
